About

Why Colosseum exists

Colosseum is a desktop media app: a Stremio for comics, manga, books, audiobooks, TV, movies and anime. It is split into sub-apps dedicated to each medium.

Each one has its own library, and its own reader or player built in.

How it started

When I started building Colosseum it was called Tankoban, and it was manga-only. I was creating the app for myself. I still am.

Along the way I built five video players, four comic readers and two book readers. The functionality I wanted, I had achieved many times over. What I did not have was the ecosystem: something that ties all of it together.

One app, not three

People love their media organised, and not just movies or TV but all kinds. One app is always better than three. I wanted it to look and feel like an OS, with a taskbar and multiple sessions that you can minimise and jump between.

A movie isn’t a player screen that takes over the app until I close it. It just becomes another open session.

It does a lot. The rule underneath is to hide that complexity within simplicity.

A bookshelf, not a bin

The place I get my comics from is a feed of around 72,000 uploads, with no series and barely any tags. It works as a source. As a catalogue it was unusable. So I matched those uploads to a proper comics database, series by series.

Nobody wants to browse that bin. They want a bookshelf. I want a bookshelf.

Manga gets the same treatment. Colosseum treats manga as actual books: volumes on a shelf, not a list of 287 chapters. Everywhere in the app, the work comes first and the source comes second.

Free, and yours

I always wanted free media catalogues and sources, like Stremio, for everything else I personally consume. Now I have it. Colosseum holds no films, books or comics of its own. What it reaches comes through sources, and every one of them can be removed.

If something feels incomplete, awkward or unnecessary, say so. You do not need to know how to code to contribute.

Made by one person and a very stubborn team of machines.
